Career Transition with Emily
What sparked your career change?
The opportunity to help more people and still do a combination of everything I love, the opportunity to custom build my life around what was important to me.
What work were you doing previously?
I started my work life in a meat factory, I knew quickly it wasn’t long term, I started Real Estate and Recruitment when I was 21, I worked my way up and was always looking to either own my own office, build my own team or become a leader.
What are you doing now?
I currently run the state of Victoria as officer in effective control for a Real Estate company along with growing a team and sell property too.
Why did you change jobs?
Growth, I was always looking for what’s next.
What process did you go through to decide to change?
A massive personal growth period of my life, life experience. I had to learn to let go of the past in order to build a strong future.
How did you go about making the shift?
Made promises to myself and kept them, no matter what!
Decided, made decisions about what I wanted.
Made a plan and remained consistent.
What help did you manage to get?
I was lucky enough to have met many inspirational people along my journey, I knew fantastic Recruiters when I got a call from Richard and Nikki one day, I knew I had to listen.
It is important to have these relationships in business if you don’t already have them, build them! You’ll never “apply” for another role.
Having your CV or Resume updated by someone who knows what they’re doing is a must! I have helped other achieve their dream roles, simply by changing their resumes for them, they simply weren’t showing who they were on paper towels get to the interview process and were being overlooked.
What was the hardest part of changing careers?
I definitely had to make scarifices, while all of my friends were out partying I was making calls, dropping flyers and attending appointments. Eventually we our paths went in different directions.
What have you learned in the process?
Don’t give up! Don’t make excuses! I often tell myself during really tough times “don’t stop 3 feet from gold” and “this is your test of worthiness for the amazing on its way”. You can make excuses or your dreams come true but often not both. If it’s truly important you’ll find the time.
Are you happy with the change?
Absolutely and no doubt there will be more to come.
What do you miss and what don’t you miss?
In a weird and wonderful way I miss being at the beginning, it’s so exciting! I don’t miss not being taken seriously as a young person, people used to think I was “too young” for a lot of things.
What do you enjoy most about your new career?
My lifestyle for sure, the fact that I can spend time with all 3 of my children, See friends, attend appointments and have a blend of everything I love daily and be paid for it. It’s still a “pinch me” concept, surely it can’t be real.
What do you wish you’d done differently?
Communicate better for sure, with everyone! From colleagues to previous employers and potential clients.
The other thing I wish I’d done differently is my database, I understand it’s not everyone’s forte but it’s hands down one of the most important things to look after.
What 3 tips would you give advice to others in the same situation?
1. Have a plan, otherwise you are in fact wandering around aimlessly.
2. Have your “house” in order – the right people around you, your health and wellbeing MUST come first, nothing else will click without it.
3. Go for it, make promises to yourself and keep them! Don’t make excuses, just do it! Leap out of the fish bowl and get uncomfortable – your new life is just outside of that comfort zone.
